Bulawayo Province
The City of Kings & Queens

Bulawayo Province

The City of Bulawayo was originally the home of King Lobengula, the last of the Matabele Kings. It is known as "The City of Kings" because of the Ndebele chiefs who ruled in the area after breaking away from Zulu land in the south. However, of late it is referred to as the City of Kings and Queens to appease the Bulawayo women. Today, Bulawayo is one of the country's most attractive cities, with a pleasing mixture of Victorian and modern architecture. From a tourist point of view it has a lot to offer — the National Art Gallery, the National Railways Museum, the Natural History Museum, Hillside Dams Conservancy and the Heritage Trail — as well as Matobo National Park (where Cecil John Rhodes and King Mzilikazi are buried), Khami Ruins, Umguza Nature Reserve and Umguza Yacht Club. Bulawayo remains the country's cultural centre and is a gateway to Hwange, Victoria Falls and Great Zimbabwe.
